Horatio Alger was an American Author who inspired thousands, even millions, of Americans to seek and achieve the American dream of success and prosperity. He wrote many exciting stories about young men who passionately strove to succeed in various businesses and creative ventures. Although Alger died in 1899, the Horatio Alger Society (qv) continues his vision and philosophy today.

Unfortunately the focus of today's media is not on individual exceptionalism as personified by Alger's heroes, but on the expectations of entitlements. The only entitlements in Alger's lexicon were opportunities, and his heroes always found them. We all need to extol and encourage individual initiative. Individual initiatives, not entitlements are the foundations of growth both in the family and in the community.
