Yes, Solar generation of electric power works profitably in Hamden, Connecticut. It works because there are no transmission (distribution) costs involved. A recent residential electric bill showed a generation cost of $45.11 and a transmission cost of $75.43, but the recently built Hamden Middle School was designed and built to use solar collector panels on its roof - thereby eliminating the transmission costs.

The local electric company is pleased as well, because much of the electric power purchased from it (with distribution costs included) is during off peak times - especially during the summer. This also reduces the total capacity requirements which the utility must maintain but seldom use.
